In 2002, German-born Gerhard Stromberg was the first photographic artist to be commissioned by the University of Sunderland.
The environments and landscapes Stromberg encountered during his time in the North East region evoked childhood memories of his experiences growing up in Germany.  This relationship between visual perception and memory plays a key role in the work, the title of the series ‘Or So It Seemed’ reflects the elusiveness of the past and our struggle to capture fixed images of what has gone before.

The work has been exhibited at the Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art, Sunderland and Entwistle, London.
‘Or So It Seemed’, published by the University of Sunderland, featuring written creative contribution by Esther Kinsky, ISBN: 1-873757-24-7.
